No sound from my surround sound when im trying to watch normal tv?

I have a Panisonic surround sound unit and a 42" Lcd Vizio tv.. My surround sound unit only has sound when I put in a dvd, but when I try it with cable I can not get the sound to come out of it. The same thing happend with my old Sony surround sound unit. I could not get the Sony to produce any sound with cable, it would only have sound with a dvd. I would appreciate any help on this one. Anything. Thank you for your time

You don't say how anything is connected, so I'm guessing.

First, you can't connect cable direct to a surround sound amp/receiver ... you have to a) go the the TV and use the audio out from it to the input of the surround receiver (and turn the input selector on the receiver to whichever input you have the TV connected to), or b) use a cable box and take the audio from it to the receiver (as in a).

For surround sound there a) has to be surround sound sent from the TV station (not all programs are surround), and b) you have to use an optical (or coaxial or HDMI) cable to connect or c) you have to use matrix surround (e.g. ProLogic) on the receiver to generate matrix surround from stereo (if using a red/white RCA cable).
