CYBER MEDIA: A NEW MEDIA TOOL EXPLORED IN ITS ENTIRETY

 

The National Cyber Media Conclave saw nine emminent stalwarts from the media industry gathering on one platform and exposing the students of Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication to the different facets of cyber media: the emerging new media tool. Through lectures, discussions, question answer sessions and workshops the speakers tried to project the power and influence of the new media and how effective it can be in achieving its objectives.

The National Cyber Media Conclave was held in the auditorium of the institute at Symbiosis Knowledge Village in Lavale. It was inaugarated by the Ms. Jasmin Pathija, Founder of Blanknoise and other speakers attending the session. It was followed by a prayer song by one of our own students, Ms. Shilpa Natarajan and a speech by our director Mr. Ujjwal Kumar Choudhary.

The first session saw the speakers presenting their views and thoughts on the theme: Potency of cyber media for information exchange, social change and networking. Hosted by the Ranjan and Riya, two of our own students, the session consisted of speakers like Mr. Kiruba, Co founder, The knowledge foundation; CEO , Business blogging pvt. ltd. Faculty at ACJ, Madras Advertising club, International Institute of journalism, Berlin; Mr. Shivam Vij, Owner of the popular website- national highway ; Mr. Shiv Bhaskar, CEO, The viewspaper;  Ms. Jasmeen, founder, Blanknoise.

Mr. Kiruba Shankar spoke on the topic of “ internet as a tool for networking and knowledge sharing”. He proved his point by giving an example from his personal life- how Twitter had helped him in finding a neuro-surgeon in Chennai when his wife was taken ill a few days back. Similarly, he focussed on the importance of blogging and internet social networking for business success in the present times. He was followed by Mr. Shivam Vij, who spoke on social media and polity.

 Mr. Shiv Bhaskar considered Cyber News Media as the Fourth Estate. According to him, there are four important estates- executive, legialature, judiciary and the media. The power of the cyber media in bringing about a change in the country is tremendous. Ms. Jasmine Pathija, spoke on the use of social media to fight against street sexual harrassment. She is the founder of Blanknoise, a portal through which she could connect to thousands of women in India as well as abroad.

The afternoon session saw the speakers presenting their views on the theme of: Emergence of the web as a medium of Branding and Marketing. Mr.Rajesh Lalwani spoke on “blogworks- strategic social media solutions”. He spoke on the concept of being in the field to win the battle. Blogging and social as well as business networking sites like Linkedin provide a great opportunity to connect and stay connected. He was followed by Ms. Rashmi Dhanwani who is associated with Breakthrough which launched the Bell Bajao Campaign to stop domestic violence. Namit Bimbhat spoke on the evolution of online video and its relevance in India and MR. J. Mahadevan spoke on the concept of online brand building. The session was followed by question answer rounds and a workshop.

On the whole the conclave proved to be a learning experience for many of us. It exposed us to many facets of cyber media which were not known to us. We sincerely hope that the college organises more such seminars for the betterment of the students.
